Ayurveda (A-yur-ved-a): India’s traditional medical system which is based on the idea of balance bodily systems for whole body health

In Ayurveda and Your Mental Health: An Introduction, I share about the different ways Ayurveda and our mental health are related. Given the official start of Spring was this week, I thought it would be fun to share how Ayurveda can support us, especially as the seasons change 💙

Ayurveda views everyone as whole and complete with nothing lacking, nothing broken, and therefore anything is possible. We might just have forgotten, and that is where the practices and techniques of Ayurveda and our mental health come in... Ayurveda argues that when we were created, the elements of ether/space, air, fire, water, and earth bound to us in a very individual, particular, and perfect way. Our original elemental makeup is what makes us balanced and whole. Distress and dysfunction occur when we forget that we are whole and complete and live in ways that create elemental imbalance and agitation in our physical, mental, and emotional life.

To find out which Ayurvedic practices work best for each of us, it is important to find our elemental makeup, or our dosha. To find out what your dosha is, you can take an online dosha quiz, I love this one. The doshas and their elemental compositions are:

Vata (vha-ta)= Ether/Space + Air

Pitta (ph-it-ta)= Fire + Water

Kapha (kha-fa)= Water + Earth

Finding out our dosha is the first step in developing Ayurvedic practices to maintain and re-establish balance in our life, especially in the seasonal transitional periods.

People are not the only ones who have a dosha. Emotions, colors, times of day, times of our lives, and seasons have their own elemental makeup that balance, agitate, enhance, or diminish the expression and reflection of our elemental makeup. Therefore it is important to be mindful of how our mental health can be impacted by the seasons and also how we can (and should) adjust our daily routines and self-care practices to align with the seasons. The seasonal dosha breakdown is:

Fall - Vata (space and air)

Winter - Kapha (water and earth)

Spring - Kapha and Pitta (fire, water, and earth)

Summer - Pitta (fire and water)

A helpful way to conceptualize this Ayurvedic concept is to consider the New Year's resolution. Have you ever made a resolution to work out more or lose weight only for your motivation to fizzle out in a week or two? Either you didn’t see any results or your motivation waned? If we consider that winter time is the time of water and earth (kapha), these elements have the attributes of heavy, cold, slow, dense, cloudy, and static. There is a reason bears hibernate in the winter. To go up to a hibernating bear and say “hey you! lazy bear! you need to go do a high intensity work out and lose weight” is both unwise and unsafe...

When we have a clear sense of not only our dosha, but the seasonal doshas, we can make more informed decisions of how to spend our energy and time. We can also fortify ourself against societal and cultural values that might not be aligned with our very individual and personal actual wants and needs and therefore be empowered to live a life that is more aligned with our authentic self.

In a season as cold as winter, your body needs to be heavy, slow, dense, cloudy, and static to rest, restore, and rejuvenate for the warming of the Spring and heat of Summer. The practices of Ayurveda help us tap into our physical, mental, and emotional intuition. When we get that sudden urge to do some Spring cleaning, when a little fire (or Pitta) gets us motivated to shed what we no longer need, that is the sign that it is time to start getting a little bit more mobile, bring some heat, and get out into the light.

It is important to note that Ayurveda is not about "fixing" anything, but bringing awareness to what is happening and putting in, and keeping present, the practices that will bring us back into balance. Knowing how the seasons may impact our dosha, and our mental health needs, only gives us more knowledge and power to develop a plan that will bring balance and ease back into our life.

If you are interested in learning more about how you can start anew this season using Ayurvedic practices, you can read the full article here and find other helpful Ayurvedic, mindfulness, and mental health resources here.

"Notice your seat, and your body's contact to the floor...now notice the outer shell of your body...your skin as a container. Now imagine at the top of your head there's an opening to your container...

And into this opening, at the crown of your head, is poured a liquid sunshine. Imagine this liquid sunshine is slowly being poured through the opening at the op of your head, filling your body from the bottom of your feet up...

Allow it to fill you up - from your feet...knees..through your legs..filling up into your pelvis,..abdomen...and your vital organs (pause)

Let his liquid sunshine fill up to the level of your chest and upper back, overflowing through your neck into your arms and hands...Filling up through your throat and all the way up into your skull...

Let this liquid sunshine overflow out of the opening at the top of your head...and over your skin...covering everything completely (pause)

Notice how the physical and emotional debris in your container...your stress...body aches...mental clutter...allow for all of this debris to be absorbed...like a sponge by this powerful and healing liquid sunshine...Everything that is no longer needed is absorbed (pause)

Now...imagine that your fingertips are your toes are release valves and open them up for the liquid to pour out...

From the crown down...allow this liquid to drain out through your fingertips and toes...draining out and carrying out all of the old debris...clearing out and cleansing out your entire body..as it washes out the old allowing you to be in the experience of yourself as a new space...and now experience your body as a new space...be in your body as a space (pause)

A clearing for anything is possible...allow yourself to be in the experience of anything is possible.

Whenever you are ready, place your hand on your heart, and take a full deep breath in and out."

"Find a comfortable spot for you to sit, gently supported. Allow your breathing to become smooth and regular. Bring your attention into the present moment, and to the sensations of your breath, the sensations of your body, particularly where it is making contact with the chair or the floor. Take a few easy, comfortable breaths. And as you breathe, imagine yourself walking through the forest. Green grass under your feet, tall trees around you, blue sky overhead. You know the way around the forest, you are safe and protected. The sun is just right, not too warm.

You feel the gentle breeze on your face. Listen to the birds overhead. Breathe in the fragrance in the air, so crisp and refreshing. Feel every step that you take. As you walk, you come to a meadow – soft green grass, wildflowers, trees all around it. Notice a shallow, fast stream of water at the edge of the meadow, underneath the trees. Come up to it and find a place to sit comfortably. Take a moment to pay attention to the water, as it runs over the rocks on the bottom of the shallow stream. Listen to the babbling sound of the water. Notice how clean and clear the water is; you can see every piece of sand, every pebble on the bottom. You might even touch the water with your hand, noticing how cool and refreshing it is.

And notice how from time to time a leaf falls from the tree, gently floats toward the stream, lands in the water, and is carried away by the current. And another leaf falls from the tree, floats toward the water, and is carried away. Watch how the leaf slowly descends, twirling slightly toward the water, landing on its surface and floating away, out of sight.

Now pay attention to the thoughts going through your mind right now. Whatever those thoughts are, notice them, pick one, attend to it kindly for a moment, long enough to label the thought as planning, or wishing, or worrying, or predicting, or whatever the thought might be. Now imagine gently taking it out of your mind and placing it on one of those falling leaves, watching it twirl toward the water, land on its surface and float away, out of sight. Notice another thought, attend to it for a moment with curiosity, label it, place it on a falling leaf, watch it twirl toward the water and float away, out of sight. There is no need to engage with those thoughts, no need to change them in any way, no need to hold on to them, no need to make them go away. Simply notice a thought, label it, place it on a leaf, and watch it float away.

When you notice your mind engaging with a thought and following it somewhere, acknowledge that, and wherever you find your mind going, gently allow it to return to watching your thoughts, and the leaves, and the stream. Notice a thought, label it, place it on a leaf, and watch it float away, out of sight. You will notice that some thoughts come back, again and again. That is what our thoughts do, they come and go, they come and go. No matter whether you’ve experienced this thought before a moment ago or if you haven’t seen it in a while, notice it, attend to it for a brief moment, with kindness, label it, place it on a leaf, and watch it land on the water and float away. There is no need to engage or argue with the thoughts, no need to change the thoughts, no need to hold on to them or make them go away. Simply attend to the thoughts, coming and going, coming and going. Notice a thought, label it, place it on a leaf and watch it float away, out of sight.

If you notice yourself judging yourself for having some of those thoughts, or judging the thoughts themselves, notice that, label the judging thought as judgment, place it on a leaf, watch it twirl toward the stream and float away. Watch thoughts come and go, as they always do. Whatever the thought is, notice it, attend to it with kindness, place it on a leaf and watch it float away. Now take as much time as you’d like to attend to your thoughts, watching them come and go.

Whenever you are ready, open your eyes, place your hand on your heart, and take a full deep breath in and out."

good things are coming 💙

good things are coming 💙

good things are coming 💙

Bring your awareness to your breath for a few moments, noticing the sensations of your breath as it comes in and as it goes out. Notice the sensations of air entering your nostrils, your chest and belly gently rising with each inhalation, and falling with each exhalation, as the air flows back out of the nostrils. Notice the sensations in your body, especially the sensations of touch or pressure where your body comes in contact with the chair (or the bed, couch, or floor) – your back against the back of the chair, your arms on the armrests, your feet on the floor. Notice the external sensations of the position of your body in the chair or on the floor, and the internal sensations within your body – your breath, your heartbeat, the pulsation and vibration of your body.

Now let yourself remember a mildly difficult situation. Recall what happened, what you were thinking and especially what you were feeling. Now expand your awareness to your body as a whole. While you recall the emotion, notice where you feel the emotion in your body. In your mind’s eye, sweep your body from head to toe, stopping where you can sense a little tension or discomfort.

Now choose a single location in your body where the feeling expresses itself most strongly, perhaps as a point of muscle tension or an achy feeling. In your mind, incline gently toward that spot. Continue to breathe naturally, allowing the sensation to be there, just as it is. If you wish, place your hand over your heart as you continue to breathe. Allow the gentle, rhythmic motion of the breath to soothe your body.

If you feel overwhelmed by an emotion, bring your attention to your breath and stay with it until you feel better and then return to the emotion.

Now allow yourself to soften into the location in your body where you feel the emotion most strongly. Let the muscles be softer without a requirement that they become soft or that they relax. Just let the muscles soften like they do when you apply heat to sore muscles. You can say silently to yourself, “soft . . . soft . . . soft . . .” as you allow your muscles to soften around the area of discomfort. Remember that you are not trying to make the sensation go away, you are simply allowing your body to soften while letting the sensations of discomfort stay.

Now soothe yourself for struggling in this way. If it feels comfortable, place your hand over your heart and feel your body breathe. Or you might direct some kind- ness to the part of your body where you feel the difficult emotion by placing your hand over that place. Feel the warmth of your hand, soothing and bringing comfort. You might send your breath to the part of the body where you feel the difficult emotion, soothing and comforting. Silently say to yourself, “soothe . . . soothe . . . soothe.”

Finally, allow the discomfort to be there. Abandon the wish for the feeling to disappear. Let the discomfort come and go, make space for it, and allow it to be just as it is. Repeat silently to yourself, “allow . . . allow . . . allow.”

Now put it all together, letting your body soften, soothing yourself for struggling, and allowing the difficult feelings to stay, saying silently to yourself, “Soften, soothe, and allow.” “Soften, soothe, and allow.” You can use these three words like a mantra, rolling them around in your mind.

Stay with your feelings and with the mantra for as long as you wish, and whenever you are ready, slowly return to the rest of your experience.

Funnel your awareness down your arms, through your elbows, down your forearms, into your hands (pause)

Keep your awareness in your hands - your palms, your thumbs, your first fingers, second fingers, third fingers, and your baby fingers. Shift your focus from one finger to another as a method of anchoring and centering you here (pause)

Keep your attention on your hands as a bridge from your awareness to your body as an anchor to the now here moment - if at any time you notice yourself drifting off into thinking (pause) if your mind wanders, simply bring your attention back to your hands (pause)

As you hold your attention on your hands, notice if they tingle - where your awareness goes, energy flows (pause)

Your hands are a grounding point for you consciousness in the here and now. As thoughts come up - just notice them and let them flow, let them come up and let them flow...put your attention on your hands and let your thoughts come up and let them flow (pause)

Experience the power of reconnecting to your hands and beginning again...moment by moment by moment (pause)...keep your attention on your hands and be newly anchored in the now here moment and newly available to the moment.

I will start filling my own cup...

I will start filling my own cup...

I love the season of valentine's ❤️ Yes, it may be a Hallmark holiday intended to keep me shopping after the holiday season slump AND it gives me life because I love sparkles, hearts, cheetah print, and fruit filled varieties of dark chocolate, all of which I can find at my local CVS. The burst of pink and red hearts is the pop of joy I need in what can be a very dark and cold time of year. And with the prophetic groundhog predicting an early spring, it is also a reminder that, while I love and care for others deeply, this season is also for me and I can start my spring awakening by

filling my own cup,

Being my own muse,

Knowing my own worth,

Loving my own skin,

Praising my own existence,

Validating my own journey,

Speaking my own truth,

Admiring my own reflection,

Experiencing my own love,

Enjoying my own company,

Extending my own energy,

Creating my own paradise.

These acts are not selfish, but self-first, and support the practice of self-LOVE. And when this practice falters, the below loving kindness meditation helps me get re-grounded and centered in my highest intention for myself...I hope you enjoy ❤️

Loving Kindness Meditation

You, of all beings, are most deserving of your love, your kindness, and your care. When we begin to truly love ourselves, we can begin to truly love others. We can begin to view others and the world through our love.

Bring your awareness to the physical sensations in your body.

Move your awareness to your breath.

Move your awareness to your your heart center.

Imagine you are breathing in and out of your heart.

Staying focused on your breath and heart center, begin repeating these words silently to yourself:

May I be filled with loving kindness

May I be healthy

May I be safe, peaceful and at ease

May I be truly happy and free

(repeat three times)

Now, bring your awareness to someone in your life who has truly cared about or for you. Picture them at your heart center.

Staying focused on your breath and heart center, begin repeating these words silently to this person:

May you be filled with loving kindness

May you be healthy

May you be safe, peaceful and at ease

May you be truly happy and free

(repeat three times)

Now, bring your awareness to someone in your life with whom you have a difficult relationship with. Picture them in front of you.

Staying focused on your breath and heart center, begin repeating these words silently to this person:

May you be filled with loving kindness

May you be healthy

May you be safe, peaceful and at ease

May you be truly happy and free

(repeat three times)

Staying focused on your breath and heart center, repeat after me out loud:

May I be filled with loving kindness

May I be healthy

May I be safe, peaceful and at ease

May I be truly happy and free

(repeat three times)

what if you have what it takes?

what if you have what it takes?

I've often said in classes I teach, if you want the thing, you have to do the thing. If you want a yoga practice, you have to do the practices of yoga. And the funny thing is, the practices of yoga (all eight limbs) are not necessarily about doing the thing to get the thing, they are about being the thing to remember you already had the thing all along. The practices of yoga help us clean away the unhelpful thought and belief patterns that we hold about ourselves. It is a way to clean our Buddhi so the light of our Purusha can authentically come through our way of being. If you want to learn more about nurturing your authentic self, you can check out the recording of the Ayurveda for the Winter Blues session here.

What would be possible if you paused, and instead of automatically doing the thing to get the thing, you asked yourself, what if I already have what it takes? How would I move forward differently if I already had the thing? It is a curious practice with even more curious results that might surprise you 💙

When you start the practice of physically stopping what you are doing when thoughts of not being enough come up, taking three full deep breaths, and telling yourself you are enough and putting your attention on all that is going well, you might be surprised at what starts to happen. It may be a slow process, but it can be steady. Stepping in front of feelings of not being enough, and coming from I am enough, allows you to open your heart to all that is actually possible and all that you have actually accomplished.

Where our attention goes, energy flows. I invite you to ask yourself, if you put your attention on, and open your heart to, everything that is working, easeful, brings joy, etc. etc. in your life, what becomes possible? What can you start to see that you didn't see before?

We have some great meditations on our Anjali Power Yoga Away page that can support you in int he practice of putting your attention on what is possible, specifically A Space for Experience and Open to possibility (narrated by me lol). This page is our way to give back and offer free and accessible content, I hope you enjoy and that it in a small way supports you to open your heart, in whatever way you need 💙

you are enough ❤️

you are enough ❤️

you are enough ❤️

Yet the structures and communities you live in might have you feeling like you are lacking, broken, and/or that there is something “wrong” with you. Life can be hard, and it can make us hard. Hard on ourselves, hard on the people we love, and hard on the people we interact with.

But the truth is, you are whole and complete, with nothing lacking and nothing broken. And when we start viewing ourselves in every part of our life as enough, as whole and complete, as we are doing the best we can with what we have and know, we start to create possibility in our lives.

Looking at the world from a possibility frame is about being in our yoga practice, our relationships, our businesses with a mindset of what is possible as opposed to what I or others are doing "wrong" or lacking in. It isn't easy, but it can be simple.

The next time you are in an asana pose, meditation, or journaling and the thought of "I'm doing this wrong," "others are better than me," "I shouldn't be here," or any other thought you may have in the realm of lack and not good enough, I invite you to stop, take a breath, tell yourself you are enough, and start again...you might be surprised and how this little shift in thought can make a big difference in your life ❤️

Thank you for being you ❤️

what if it's meant to work out?

Interesting thought? It is not the brain's tendency to look out for the best, but prepare us for the worst. So it is a practice to remind ourselves that things could actually work out. That all the plans we put in place will succeed. That we have done and are enough and now we just need to let our plans flow ❤️

An asana practice can be a powerful physical embodiment of that flow. No pushing, no punishing, no powering through, no forcing...just being in the flow with your breath and the breath of those around you ❤️ Asana is intended to prepare your physical form and build you up for the road ahead, if it starts to feel and or sound like something different, stop, change, and restart with the idea that when you go with the flow, what is meant to work out will work out. ❤️

Thank you for being you and all that you do wishing you season filled with peace, joy, and love ❤️

Winter Solstice: 108 Sun Salutations

with Lisa Horoff

Thursday December 21 - 2-4pm - $25

Happy Winter Solstice! Let the days become lighter and lighter!

The Winter Solstice, the longest day of darkness and the changing of the seasons, marks the end of the shortest, darkest days and the beginning of new light, life, and opportunities. Around this time, yoga really takes on a new life. 108 Sun Salutations is one way that yogis celebrate the change of a brighter sky.

The physical practice is like a mini yoga marathon that puts to the test your physical and mental endurance. Your mind may come up with a lot of reasons you can’t do it, can you put those thought fluctuations to the side? Can you instead focus on here and now, being present, and adapting as needed? It is a cleansing and purifying process of body, mind, and spirit. There’s a tremendous power in the process, even if you do not fully complete it.

Possibilities are endless….We complete 9 sets of 12 Sun Salutations, alternating directions with each set (East, West, North, South) In the sequence of completing 5 sets of A and 4 sets of Sun B= 9 sets. You will complete this 12 times. We will discuss the safety of a vigorous practice and how we can change the salutation to meet your needs. Using intentions, mudras, affirmations to move you forward into your practice.

You’re stronger than you think! Everyone & Anyone welcome!

Self-Care for the Winter Blues 💙

Self-care is important ALL year and there is something about the winter and holiday season that make our commitment to our care even more important, and yet more difficult. Longer nights, shorter days, and extra commitments can disrupt our routine and commitment to the little and big things that set us up for success and keep us inspired. That is why this season we are offering so many opportunities for you to stay committed and inspired by your practices and your care 💙 This starts with a complimentary workshop on self-care, some fun arm balancing workshops, TWO opportunities to celebrate the Winter Solstice, and ending with a workshop to give love to your hips and hamstrings...

Complimentary Workshop: Self-Care for the Winter Blues with Lucia Cucinotta

Tuesday November 28th 12-1pm

This workshop is virtual and held via Zoom

Learn how Ayurvedic self-care practices can help you beat the winter blues. In this interactive workshop, Lucia will lay down the Ayurvedic framework and self-care practices that can support you in developing a realistic daily routine that sets you up for success for the darkest and coldest time of year.

People with the winter blues, sometimes knowns as seasonal depression, experience mood changes during the fall and winter months, with the most difficult months for people being January and February. The winter blues have been linked to a biochemical imbalance caused by shorter days and less intense sunlight. As seasons change, people experience a shift in their internal clock that can cause them to be out of step with their daily schedule and flow of their life.

In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life” and teaches us that we each have a specific elemental makeup that is unique. We are perfect in our own way and suffering occurs when we forget this important truth. Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be one of the oldest healing science and is the sister science of Yoga. Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and many of the healing systems familiar in the West have their roots in Ayurveda.

This workshops is held via Zoom and you will receive the link upon registration. Session will be recorded and shared with registered participants after the session.

Sending out the newsletter early to remind everyone of the amazing workshop we have happening TODAY with Lisa! There are only a few spaces left so I want to be sure you know and can get a spot 💙

Uncovering YOUR Fullest Expression with Lisa Horoff

TODAY Saturday November 11th 12-1:15pm

This monthly class will be addressing your questions around the body. We all live in different physical structures and we should be honoring them as they are, perfectly imperfect. The more body awareness we have around the poses and our breath, the more we can sink into them or know when enough is enough. The story is being written while you are on the mat.

This class is to help you honor, learn and trust your body in YOUR body's fullest expression.

You will be discussing

  • Alignment of the poses and how to keep your body safe

  • What tools we could use for fullest expression

  • What may be holding you back

  • The Inter-Relations of your Core strength & True North within JIP The Importance of mobility of the Shoulder & Hips within JIP

  • Foundations of Arm Balances and Inversions Practice

Come with questions, ideas, what are you working on?

This will be a chance for open discussion on what you are struggling with or confused about within your practice.

Thank you for being you and all that you do, I am forever grateful for you, this studio, and this powerful community, we wouldn't be here without you 💙

with gratitude,

Lucia (she/her/hers)

💜 I will give myself the care I need 💜

It can be hard out there...and it can make us hard, hard on ourselves, and hard on the people we care for. That is why my intention with these weekly newsletters (and social media posts) has been a kind of love letter to the community.

Every time I put together a newsletter, or post, I think, how can this add value to someone's day? How can this create ease? How can I incorporate as many cat and dog pictures as possible while supporting someone in caring for themself just a little bit more each day?

A lot of the tips and tools I share are from my years of studying and teaching yoga (and all it's eight limbs) and Ayurveda as part of the regular studio happenings and special workshops and teacher trainings. More recently, a lot has come from my work as a therapist and my continued studies on holistic mental health care. I am still very much involved at Anjali Power Yoga AND am building a counseling practice and program offerings with the mission to empower you to connect to your whole and complete self so you can be your authentic self 💜

If you, or someone you know, has benefitted from the jam and jelly I'm spreading, feel free to set up a complimentary consultation with me HERE to learn more about how I can support you in bringing a little bit more ease into your life 💜 You can also check me out at Forum and some of the Peer Support Groups I (and a list of amazing other practitioners) are leading on grief, empowerment, and overall self-care through community. I'm so glad you are here and I would love to work with you 💜

ALSO November is The Month of Gratitude at Anjali Power Yoga!! and there are lots of different ways to give back to the people and communities you are thankful for 💜

Sometimes, "strength" looks like this...

Sometimes, "strength" looks like this: "I am doing what I can right here, right now, and that is okay."

Strength, like your practice, can look and feel a lot of different ways. The practices of yoga (such as asana, meditation, and self-inquiry) can help you connect to your authentic strength and how it manifests for you. That is why I am excited to announce a special workshops series that Lisa Horoff plans to do every month starting in November! This workshop is for you to tap into your unique strengths, YOUR fullest expressions...
