Yamas and Niyamas

With Alison Lubar

Join poet, educator, and yoga teacher Alison Lubar for a three-class series on the Yamas & Niyamas, yoga's ethical foundations, to discover how to embody them on and off the mat. Each session will offer inquiry questions into these principles followed by a yoga flow that gives students methods for integrating them in their own practice. This series is part yoga philosophy, part yoga practice, and wholly customized to each participant.

  • Session 1 (July 6) The Yamas - ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha

  • Session 2 (July 13) The Niyamas - saucha, santosha, tapas, svadhyaya, ishvara pranidhana

  • Session 3 (July 20) Intention into Action - integrating both the Yamas and Niyamas into your daily practice - whole is the goal!

Alison Lubar

Alison's classes, whether Hour of Power or Slow Flow, have ahimsa at their heart-- a foundation of self-love and compassion. They love to incorporate freedom and possibility in the form of innovative ways to use props, and opportunities for creating more heat or more restoration; this provides students with ways to customize their practice in each moment of class. Alison also focuses on breathwork both as a means to stay present and a way to stay connected. They frequently play sound bowls at the beginning or the end of class, and almost always use their clack fan to give students a refreshing extra breeze in savasana. As a poet, Alison also encourages students to consider the ways that words create their world, and the power of listening to the body as a source of wisdom. With a strong focus on community, you can expect to leave Alison's classes feeling restored and grounded in yourself and in the community around you.
